Simple Art Scanner Privacy Policy

This policy covers Simple Art Scanner on iPhone, iPad, and Android. Last updated October 18, 2026.

The short version

I don’t collect any of your data. There’s no account, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. Your photos and your library stay on your devices and, if you turn on sync, in your own iCloud or Google Drive. Label scanning runs on your device.

Your library

The photos you scan or import, including the uncropped originals and extra pages, and their details (title, artist, year, medium, exhibition, venue, folders, and notes) are stored on your device. Nothing leaves your device unless you turn on sync or share something yourself.

Camera and photos

The app uses the camera only while you’re scanning an artwork or a label. When you import a photo, the system photo picker gives the app only the photos you choose, not the rest of your library. On iPhone and iPad, the app asks for access to Photos only if you choose to save an artwork there.

Label scanning

Reading a wall label happens on your device. The text is recognized on the device (by Apple’s Vision framework on iPhone and iPad, and by Google’s ML Kit on Android) and sorted into artist, title, year, and the other fields by an on-device model where your device has one (Apple Intelligence on iPhone and iPad, Gemini Nano on supported Android devices) or by rules built into the app. Your label photos and their text are never sent to me or to an online AI service.

On Android, ML Kit and Google Play services may download recognition models and send Google diagnostic information about how these features perform, such as the device model, Android and app versions, response times, and error codes. It doesn’t include your photos or the text of your labels. Google describes it in ML Kit’s data disclosure, and Google’s privacy policy applies to it.

Sharing

When you share an artwork, the image file carries its details (such as title, artist, and year) as embedded metadata, so they travel with it. It goes only to the app or person you choose.

Sync on iPhone and iPad

Sync uses iCloud Drive. Your library is stored in the app’s own folder in your iCloud account, which is managed by your Apple Account settings. I can’t see it. On iPhone and iPad, saved artworks also appear in Spotlight search; that index stays on your device.

Sync on Android

Sync between your Android devices is optional and uses your own Google Drive. When you turn it on, you choose a Google account and the app asks for access to its own app data folder in that Drive (the drive.appdata permission). It can only see the files it created there, not the rest of your Drive. Your library, images included, is stored in that folder and only used to keep your devices in sync. The images count toward your Google storage. Your library goes from your device to your Drive and never to me or anyone else.

Turning sync off stops it and keeps your library on the device. To delete the synced copy, choose Turn off sync and delete synced data in the app’s Sync settings, or remove the app’s hidden data under Manage apps in Google Drive’s settings. Your library is not included in Android’s automatic backups; only the app’s settings are.

Reviews

After you’ve saved a few artworks, the app may ask the App Store or Google Play to show its standard review prompt. Apple and Google decide whether it appears, and their own privacy policies apply.

Children

The app doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, including children.
